It is unbelievable that Eagleburger has such an undivided attention of the US
corporate media on the issue of Yugoslavia, the issue where he failed so
extravagantly, that at one point of his Secretary of State duty, senator
D'Amato, a fellow Republican, stood up reminding him that he was then supposed
to represent American interests, not interests of Slobodan Milosevic any more,
and that those two sets of interests did take different paths meanwhile.
It is touchy how Larry is standing up for his friend Slobo, who wined and dined
him for many years of ambassadorship in Belgrade (Eagleburger returned to the
U.S. about 20 pounds heavier), but it is essentially his own butt he is trying
to protect. The various business dealings that Eagleburger brokered between
Milosevic's run Yugoslav companies and the US corporations, including deals
between military-industrial complexes went on well into the start of wars of
Yugoslav succession, and are stopped only after the sanctions took effect (at
least the open, public end of those businesses was stopped). With Milosevic in
The Hague, Eagleburger would feel uneasy, that he might be called to testify
eventually.
